Kitchen and Bath Update

When you buy a house, sometimes the kitchen and bath need updating.  Of course, they are the most expensive rooms to update!  As I always say, paint allows you to work some magic and make what is old look new again without breaking the bank.  In this home, the kitchen is nice and open to the living space, but the finishes make it look dated.  Some Dixie Belle paint in Drop Cloth, Mason Dixon Gray and Bunker Hill Blue updated the cabinets and coordinated with the homeowner's belongings.

Here's an after shot of the painted kitchen.  The previously dark cabinet in the foreground is painted to match the rest of the cabinets, as well as the dark trim above the back cabinets.  This gives the whole space a more open feeling.  The counters were painted with Gray.  Some glitter was added in for subtle shine and then multiple layers of polycrylic.  The homeowner has since updated her faucets to the same oil rubbed bronze color the cabinet door pulls were painted.  They were previously chrome and gold.  

Elements in the new design included some furniture from LaVintage Decor Studio.  The wide sofa table was requested by the homeowner and custom built by Dave Beach of Fox Chapel Iron Works.  It has since been lowered about 6 inches.  The table backs up to their scrumptious modular sofa and allows for casual dining and additional seating when they entertain. The tabletop is made from century old reclaimed hickory wood.  The stools are from Dane Noel, another vendor at LaVintage Decor, providing an unexpected industrial vibe.  This was the homeowner's suggestion after seeing the stools in the studio.  This couple was so easy to work with because they knew exactly what  they wanted, yet they were open to suggestions.  In an adjoining bathroom/laundry room, they chose a towel rack and toilet tissue holder, also from Dane Noel, in the same industrial style.  Their choice in those accessories, along with keeping the color of the walls and cabinets consistent make the whole living space cohesive.  Stop in to the studio to see the bath accessories they chose and see if they would work in your interior!

Custom made ledges were the idea of the homeowner, and provide a gallery wall for photos.  They now hold black and white photos of the couple's wedding.  As the family grows, the ledges can display children's artwork.

It's not easy being green (counter tops and tub), or a chrome light fixture or boring oak cabinets.  These finishes were high fashion when the home was built or last remodeled, but they needed to be updated for these homeowners.  Paint and LaVintage Decor to the rescue!  Tub and tile paint transformed the counter tops and tub, while the light fixture took on a new life with paint, new bulbs and shades.  A new similar fixture would have cost hundreds of dollars!  The cabinets were painted with Dixie Belle chalk paint, available at LaVintage Decor Studio in colors to coordinate with the bedding in the adjoining bedroom of this master suite.  Yankee Blue with Whitewash dry brushed on and distressed with Grunge Glaze, transformed the cabinets.  The homeowners have since replaced the faucets in the oil rubbed bronze finish and now coordinates with the updated light fixture as seen below.

Top left shows the shower walls and tub before it got covered in a blanket of white paint, especially made for tub and tile.  The back wall shows the gray pattern of the tile, and the side wall has one coat of paint on it.  The finished tub and vanity, ready for the homeowner's beautiful white ruffled shower curtain.
