While you were out...

As a big fan of Home Improvement TV, this has become a favorite game of mine.  My son and his family recently went to the beach for a week after having just moved in to their new house.  This gave me a chance to get busy on a small downstairs bathroom that needed some love.  Most people might go top down, but I started bottom up.  

Before, during and after.  The previous homeowner started to lay a new floor and stopped, leaving dried adhesive on the floor.  A new quality, textured vinyl plank floor was installed.  Any small gaps in the flooring were later concealed with Dixie Belle Swamp Mud and Tobacco Road Gel Stain.

Then, it was straight to the top.  A two tile dropped ceiling had seen better days.  Wainscoting was used as a new ceiling treatment, along with trim and corner pieces.  This added a certain coziness to the room.

The medicine cabinet got a makeover by replacing the old yellowed plastic light cover with a piece of seeded glass, Edison bulbs were installed and a pair of new knobs were added to replace the existing one remaining.  The unattractive vent got disguised while still   keeping its functionality as it vents to the side.  Ledge shelves were added to provide a place for art which can be changed out when they tire of it. The sink was dated with its gold swirl, so it was treated to special Tub and Tile paint for a clean white look.  The faucet handles were destined to be replaced, but the only handles in the store had a warning that materials in them were known to cause cancer.  Really?  We weren't going to use them, so I used Dixie Belle's Shine on them, which works great with the new Rustic Hardware knob in mercury glass.  The cabinet was treated to Dixie Belle's Hurricane Gray with VooDoo Gel Stain in Tobacco Road.  Lastly they were coated with Gator Hide, another Dixie Belle product, to stand up to moisture in the bathroom.  Both Dixie Belle and Rustic Hardware products are available at LaVintage Decor Studio.  

So, another inexpensive makeover is complete.  No need to replace everything to have a fresh look!
